About Implant Dentistry

Dental implants are tiny posts that Dr. Devi surgically implants in the jawbone to secure a prosthetic dental device. Implants come in different sizes, but all are highly effective and bio compatible, so they are accepted by the jawbone tissue and essentially become replacement teeth roots. A single implant to hold a crown that will replace one tooth, or a few implants can hold a bridge or partial and replace several teeth.

Patients needing to replace an entire upper or lower arch of teeth, or both, can choose fixed or removable implant dentures. Four to six implants per arch are usually sufficient to provide a solid anchor for a denture, so it will not move when secured to the implants. Implant dentures are made to look and feel just like natural teeth, so you will feel confident when smiling, eating, or speaking in public.

Preparation for Implant Surgery

15.10.30 pic - Wedding couple with mom and sonIn preparing for dental implant surgery, you will first need to schedule a consultation in our Cave Creek, AZ dental office with Dr. Devi, and he will examine your teeth and take digital x-rays to check for good bone density in the jaw. Your gum tissue needs to be disease-free, as well. If the doctor determines you are a good candidate for implant surgery, he will explain your options regarding implants and answer any questions you may have. Should you need prerequisite procedures to improve your candidacy, he will explain why and inform you of what steps to take next.

Once you and Dr. Devi have decided that implants are the right course of treatment, you will need to provide us with your complete medical and dental history, as well as a list of medications you are currently taking. From there, you and the doctor will work together on a treatment plan customized to your specific needs. Be sure to talk to the doctor about anesthesia or sedation, especially if you suffer from anxiety or chronic pain.

The Implant Procedure

Dental implant surgery can be completed in one day. Upon arriving at our comfortable Cave Creek, AZ office, our caring staff will administer any sedatives or anesthesia as dictated by your treatment plan. Once you are prepared, Dr. Devi will place the implants in your jaw. Then, he will fit you with a temporary crown, bridge, or denture to wear during the process of osseointegration, when the jawbone fuses to the implants, securing them in place. This process may take up to six months. The doctor will give you detailed instructions to follow to ensure proper healing.

Follow Up

Once the implant sites have healed, you will return to our office to receive your permanent crown, bridge, or denture. The dentist will remove your temporary and attach a small connector, called an abutment, to each implant post. He will secure your crown, bridge, or denture to the implants and make sure it fits well. You will leave the office with your smile restored and your confidence soaring.

Caring for Implants

Once your permanent crown, bridge, or denture is placed, you should be able to eat anything you want without worry, but you will need to take care of the new implants to ensure that they last. With good health and proper care, your implants could last throughout your lifetime.

Caring for implants is similar to caring for natural teeth. Brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day, and floss at least once a day. If you have opted for removable dentures, they can be taken out for cleaning, but you will still need to brush to maintain a healthy mouth. Be sure to attend regular dental checkups, so Dr. Devi can continue to monitor your implants and maintain your oral health. I any special care is required, the dentist will let you know.
